Dinnerware
Dinner tastes better on fabulous dishes
One of the reasons you’ll appreciate our dinnerware selections is that they’re all exclusive to Pier 1. Designed especially for us in places like Italy, Brazil, Portugal and China, all our collections are made from high-quality materials and offer extraordinary value at affordable prices. Because most pieces are open stock, you can mix and match different patterns and purchase only the pieces you want to use.
Handy Pier 1 tableware facts:
- We adhere to the highest standard of quality to meet or exceed government requirements.
- All our dinnerware and drinkware meets the strictest FDA requirements for lead content.
- Our open stock dinnerware, barware and stemware allow you to purchase pieces individually to fit your own need.
Care of your Pier 1 dinnerware:
- Most items are dishwasher safe; however, hand washing is recommended for longevity. Dinnerware with metallic decoration should not be placed in the dishwasher.
- If you wash dishes in the dishwasher, make sure items do not touch each other – it prevents chipping.
- Most items can be used in the microwave unless otherwise indicated, with the exception of those with metallic decoration. Dinnerware should NOT be used in the regular oven.

Earthenware
is a clay-based, porous ceramic that is fired at a low temperature. It is light, pliant and able to hold brightly colored glaze. Earthenware is well-suited to the colorful, hand-painted designs you’ve come to expect from Pier 1.
|
 |
Porcelain
is a ceramic that has been fired at an extremely high temperature, making it durable and chip resistant. The clay turns white during the firing process. Porcelain is a superb, long-lasting dinnerware choice and its durability makes it an excellent value.
|
 |
Stoneware
is a heavy, non-porous pottery made from clay fired at an extremely high temperature. More durable than earthenware, stoneware is great for everyday use.
|
 |
Ironstone
is a dense, heavy clay-based ceramic that is fortified with flecks of iron. Even stronger than stoneware, ironstone is extremely durable.

Drinkware/Stemware
Drinking from rose-colored (and blue-colored and green-colored) glasses
It’s no wonder our glassware & stemware collections are so popular with people who enjoy entertaining. Discovered in places as exotic as Italy, Thailand, Turkey, India, Vietnam, France, Mexico and Slovakia, as well as the USA, our quality, eclectic variety of glassware adds a festive touch to any table. Our glassware is a fantastic value, and because it's offered in open stock, you choose only the pieces you want.
Care of your Pier 1 glassware and stemware:
All Pier 1 glassware is dishwasher safe when placed on the top rack – unless otherwise indicated.
- All stemware should be hand-washed.
- Hand wash items that have been hand-painted, have an iridescent finish or filigree decoration.
- Glass is vulnerable to extreme temperature changes. Never immerse a chilled glass in hot water; never add ice or cold liquid to a hot glass.
- Do not use glassware in the microwave unless it is specified “safe for microwave use.”
- To prevent chipping, make sure glasses do not touch each other in the dishwasher.
Types of glassware – and some unexpected ways to use them:
 |
Double Old Fashioned/Tumbler
Squatty, straight-sided glasses are used for both cocktails and non-alcoholic drinks. Pier 1 tip: Use these short and wide glasses to serve individual portions of a layered dessert such as banana pudding or a trifle.
|
 |
Flute
The long, slender shape preserves champagne bubbles. Hold by the stem to keep the drink cool. Pier 1 tip: Drop a sugar cube tinged with bitters in the bottom of the glass and then fill with champagne or sparkling cider and a twist of lemon.
|
 |
Goblet
The preferred glass for formal dinner use, it is also appropriate for water or wine. Pier 1 tip: Sturdy goblets are great for everyday use at the table. Use to serve milk, sodas, iced teas and more. Goblets are a stylish go-to glass every day of the week.
|
 |
Highball/Tumbler
These tall, straight-sided glasses are used for iced cocktails and non-alcoholic drinks. Pier 1 tip: Place a line of three to five tumblers down the center of the table and fill with small bouquets of fresh flowers.
|
 |
Martini
The wide, shallow bowl brings out the drink’s bouquet; the long stem keeps it cold. Also used for daiquiris. Pier 1 tip: Serve a scoop of your favorite sorbet topped with a few fresh berries and a swirl of lemon peel in a martini glass.
|
 |
Pilsner
The tall, tapered shape is designed to accommodate a beer’s head of foam. Pier 1 tip: Make stylish breakfast parfaits by layering colorful fresh fruits with yogurt and granola. A smart and surprising way to serve the most important meal of the day!
|
 |
Red Wine Balloon
The wide, globe-shaped bowl helps to retain red wine’s aroma. Also appropriate for water. Pier 1 tip: Having a party? Fill balloon glasses with candies, mints or nuts and place strategically about the room.
|
 |
White Wine Goblet
The smaller, slender bowl is best suited for white wines. Also suitable for water. Pier 1 tip: Finish a dinner party by serving a wine goblet filled with chocolate mousse. Place the goblet on a small plate topped with a paper doily for a charming, old-fashioned presentation.

Centerpiece Central
Think centerpieces are just for formal dinners and special occasions? Think again!
Practically speaking, a centerpiece is generally an ornamental object(s) in a central position on a table or buffet. A centerpiece can be created from plants and flowers, candles, food, or just about any type of thematic elements. It can be composed of a single item, or it may be a larger display created from a marriage of unique and different things.
At Pier 1, we encourage you to think outside of the traditional flowers in a vase. Consider these different approaches to centerpieces or be inspired to create your own!
- An assortment of candles in different heights, colors and complementary scents arranged on a golden charger or mosaic tray.
- An arrangement of small floral bouquets in glass tumblers paired with tealight candles in goblets.
- A carved wooden bowl filled with rattan balls and a swirl of rope or twine.
- A small framed mirror topped with a glass hurricane or a grouping of colorful wine bottles.
- A metal bucket filled with baseballs, tennis balls or other small balls.
- A wicker basket filled with fresh or faux fruits and berries.

Create your own work of centerpiece art by showing off groups of bowls, your favorite vintage tea set or some apothecary jars, a tray, mirror or platter.
Remember: A centerpiece should reflect your personality and taste. Also, keep centerpieces below eye level so they won't interfere with the conversation.

Table Setting Guide
Most of us don’t sit down to a five course dinner every night. In fact, a lot of the time, we are serving take-out, finger foods, pizza or a one pot dinner or casserole. Here are some table setting ideas that will take you from every day to the more formal occasion with ease. Remember to take the time to slow down, enjoy your dinner with family and friends, and get to know one another.
 |
The Everyday Casual table:
For an everyday meal, set out only the items you are actually going to use. This basic table setting is perfect for serving casseroles, take-out foods, pizza and more. Simply use a dinner plate, with drinking glass or goblet to the upper right of the plate. Fork on the left, knife on the right. The napkin can be placed on the plate. Too easy!
|
 |
The Casual Dinner table:
Perfect when serving family, guests or for home-holiday dinners. A salad or bread plate sits to the upper left, drinking glass or goblet to the upper right. We placed the folded napkin and fork to the left, and the knife and spoon to the right. This look is easy and casual – perfect for times when you just want to bring a little extra to the table.
|
 |
The Casually Elegant table:
Sometimes you just want to go all out. The casually elegant table is perfect for dinner parties, holiday gatherings or other special occasions. For this table, the dinner plate is topped with a salad plate and the napkin. A charger can be used beneath the dinner plate for extra color. A bread plate and butter knife are placed top left, while the dessert spoon and fork are placed to the top of the plate. The water goblet and wine glasses (if using) are on the right. Salad and dinner forks are placed to the left of the dinner plate, knife and soup spoon to the right.
