Once your cheery Pier 1 stockings are hung by the chimney with care, you’ll need some fun mini-gifts to stuff into them. That is so not a problem. Whether it’s child’s play or grownup goodies you’re seeking, we’ve got more stuffable stuff than you can shake a peppermint stick at.

Don’t have a fireplace? Mantel-less merrymakers have plenty of options for holiday hanging: A simple wall shelf makes a great stocking site. Doorknobs work well too, as do curtain rods and knob-type handles on cabinets. If you have a bookcase or entertainment center, tack stockings to the top where holes won’t show. Or use removable adhesive hooks if stockings are fairly lightweight. If all else fails, hang them on a wall or tuck them under the tree. Santa will find them wherever they are.

In addition to great gifts like these, you can also supplement with fun little surprises like lottery tickets, stamps, trading cards and gift cards. Or start a family tradition with old-fashioned English Christmas Crackers or accessories that will have them guessing about gifts to come (e.g. batteries, cords, mouse pads, etc.) And finally, don’t forget the fruits, nuts and hard candies. It’s not Christmas without something sticky cemented to the bottom of your stocking.

Aside from being hung by the chimney with care, stockings make fun, easy-to-personalize gifts for friends. Think of them as soft, sock-shaped gift baskets and fill them full of fun little gifts and treats. Attach a decorative gift tag, or have stockings embroidered with the recipients’ monogram or name if you really want to go all out.
