Ask any designer. If you're lucky enough to have a fireplace, make it a focal point. It's easy to do with the right mantel décor and a few design tips.

Start by selecting a color palette that pops against your background wall. Lights against darks, contrasting or complementary hues on the color wheel – you get the idea. For our fall mantel makeover, we've chosen deep orange pumpkins and berries with a brownish tree cone to complement our pale violet wall. A variety of textures and materials provide added depth and dimension. And don't think everything has to be all matchy-matchy. Balancing one or two taller items on one side with several smaller items on the other creates an asymmetrical design scheme that's perfect for casual settings.

Finally, consider including one “wow” piece for interest. Don't be afraid to think outside the box: Our dazzling gold-framed artwork is actually a serving tray.
