Drive-in movies – no driving required. One balmy summer evening in the 1930’s, Richard M. Hollingshead Jr. nailed a sheet to two trees, mounted a movie projector on the hood of his car and the world’s first drive-in theater was born. Today, drive-ins are making a comeback all across America, but it’s still fun (and frugal) to recreate that first home version right in your own back yard. Tack up a white sheet a la Hollingshead, or simply use your garage door as a screen. Arrange seating at varied levels for easy viewing – a big comfy Papasan or two, some director’s chairs and barstools, and a large rug propped with plenty of pillows. A few well-placed lanterns provide just enough light for seeing without spoiling the picture. Then, switch on your projector and enjoy the show (don’t forget the popcorn).
