There may be limits on your lease—you can’t paint, you can’t take up the carpet—but that doesn’t mean there has to be limits on your style. You can still be creative. And even on a tight budget, you can find ideas that work today and can be easily packed up when you move again.
Window Panels
More interesting than standard-issue blinds, these aren’t just for windows. Use panels to cover plain walls, divide rooms or replace closet doors. It’s instant color that’s simple to put up, simple to remove.
Lighting
You might have overhead lighting and it might vaguely resemble an interrogation room. Want a softer effect? Try easy-to-install, easy-on-the-eyes, easy-on-the-budget hanging paper lanterns suspended at varying heights or line them up for a more modern look.
Rugs
Define zones within a room, add texture and color, cover up mystery spots—you’d be surprised what a 5 x 7-foot rug can do. And don’t be afraid to layer rugs. The result can be a pretty, lush look.
Tight spaces
One word: Mirrors. It’s an old trick but one that really does create the illusion of space and light. And add your own twist. Hang mirrors in groups or choose oversized designs with chunky frames. Or both.
Bland walls
No columns? No arches? No worries. You can fake a little architectural interest with wall décor elements like wrought iron creations, carved wooden panels and other artworks that give you a big look at a small price.
